Progress is being made in cross industry adoption of management techniques and vendor packages, most notably those taken from the Manufacturing Industry, such as SAP R3, ERP, CMM, Total Quality Management, 6 Sigma. The blind adoption of these techniques and offerings, without modification to industry nuances, has led to the downfall of many.

The technology buzzwords prevalent in the late 90’s – EAI, Web Services, CRM, standardization (XML, BizNet etc..) have not delivered upon the promises envisioned. Resultant from these failures has been the shift in budgeting power from the CTO to the CFO. Many technology vendors have not adjusted to this shift by addressing the needs of the business rather than that of the technologist and has led to an ever widening gap between business needs and technology driven solutions.
